Using Days Rest Concept For Betting Systems
NFL Bye Weeks
When sports handicappers speak of days rest, they are generally referring to the amount of rest a team has coming into a game. Effectively understanding how days rest can help or hurt a team's likelihood to win against the spread (ATS) is an important sports handicapping tool.
In NFL Football the Days Rest concept applies in Football in regards to the bye week. Every football team will have one extra week off, referred to as a bye, during the regular season. They will generally be matched up with an opponent that has played the previous week. With the extra week to cool off from injuries and to scout their opponent, teams playing off of a bye generally perform much better.
NFL Thanksgiving Day Games
Another Days Rest opportunity happens at Thanksgiving, when 6 teams play on this holiday. They each will have ten days rest before the next game on the following Sunday. If they play an opponent who played a Monday night game that week, this is a great Days Rest Matchup. This year the Dolphins play a Sunday game after they play on Monday night against a Jets team that played on Thanksgiving. Jets have ten days rest, Dolphins have only 5. Keep this one in mind.
NFL Thursday Night Games
This same opportunity also occurs later in the NFL year, when the NFL schedules Thursday night games. It again provides some teams ten days rest before the next scheduled game.
